About Slackin' Idle

Slackin' Idle are a skate/pop punk band based out of Montreal, Quebec, Canada that shares a love for bands like Blink-182, Sum 41, Green Day, NOFX, and many more.  Slackin' Idle started covering songs from all those bands, and no too long after, started writing songs of our own!  With no intention of stopping, and no shortage of tom foolery and shenanigans, Lennon O'Donnell, Michel Balazic Ortiz, and Nine McIntyre will continue to find the fun in life and in music, and will hopefully share it with as many people as we can!!

Five Questions with Lennon from Montreal's Slackin' Idle

WHEN AND WHERE DID YOUR LOVE OF MUSIC FROM?

My love of music came from my family. Especially my dad’s side. My dad idolized the Beatles, hence my name being Lennon. Every night when I was little I couldn’t sleep without listening to the Beatles. My dad showed me all the classics Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Elvis, all the way to Oasis, Tom Petty, ACDC, and so many more! When COVID hit i was so bored I listened to like every Beatles song and I just wanted to hear something new. So for some reason I remembered Green Day from when I saw them play the NHL all star game. And I was like these guys probably suck let me go listen to them. The blasphemy, I know. And I heard basket case and from the very first note and word when Billie Joe said “Do you have the time” I got shivers down my spine. From there my brother showed me All time low, Good charlotte, New found glory, Simple plan, sum 41 and many more. I was a drummer when I was 8 then I picked up the bass because Paul McCartney, then guitar because of Billie Joe Armstrong. Then years later I got really in to Blink 182 and they changed my life, and now I’m in my own band.

WHAT WAS THE FIRST CONCERT YOU WENT TO?

I think the first concert I ever went to was a Justin Beiber concert. My sister got tickets for it and I think my parents just didn’t want me feeling left out but I fell asleep anyways. Then I saw Blue rodeo with my dad , he loves them they’re one of his favourite bands. Then i saw Ringo Starr he was great too. But when Blink 182 announced their tour I got tickets instantly and went with my older brother. And I didn’t know what to expect and then when they finally came on it was seriously unlike anything I’ve ever felt, heard, or seen before. It was so much louder than the other shows I’ve seen it truly resonated with me. They opened with Anthem Part Two, and they all start at the same time and my heart like jumped it was insane and then the rest of the show was so amazing. Then I saw all time low with all my friends, I saw green day twice once at a huge festival in Canada called osheaga in Montreal. I went with the band and another friend and it was insane. Rancid played too and we love them they’re one of our favorites. So seeing green day and rancid in one day all together was really special.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST “BIG SHOW”? OR YOUR FIRST SHOW EVER?

Our first show was at our school which is where we all met. This band dropped out of the open house and the music teacher knew me and Michel played together and she threw nine in the mix and we just started playing instantly in front of people which looking back on was kind of wild. Then we had this little thing at our school we just played blink 182 covers with like new found glory and sum 41 songs, it wasn’t great the bass was non existent and the drums were quiet since it was an electric kit, but was still very fun, and we were so awkward. Then we played the talent show we covered First Date by blink 182, we wanted to do carousel but the teachers didn’t like that song so we had to do first date. And I think that’s when everyone in our school actually realized we were able to play our instruments and not just carrying them around for attention. Those were our first times actually playing instantly front of people.

WHAT WAS YOUR WORST SHOW OR FUNNIEST SHOW MEMORY?

Our worst show was for sure the skate park show we played last year. It wasn’t even bad we just were told we couldn’t play but we did anyway on the grass next to the skatepark. And nine was litterally drumming slanted on the hill. And we just weren’t feeling it the vibe wasn’t there which is rare. But everyone came after our set including our friends which sucked but it was still cool. And the coolest moment was when we were playing a show back in December and we didn’t know how the turnout would be. But during a song we were jumping and we were able to see passed the blinding stage lights and we just saw a room of people jumping in sync with us and some were singing our lyrics that was insane.
