NON BINARY ROCKER JULES IS DEAD EXPLODES ONTO THE EMO-PUNK SCENE

Jules Is Dead has been catching the eye of not just the modern emo-punk scene, but major labels and the music industry experts as well. In many ways, Jules perfectly encapsulates the current zeitgeist of independent music with their inclusive nature and take no shit attitude, but don't assume that this is anything run of the mill.

Make sure to catch JULES IS DEAD when they perform with their band in Barrie, Ontario at Queens Hotel on Friday July 12th with Sydney Riley and Cousin Floyd (Justin Lawrence).

BIO:

An explosive new force in the emo/punk world, JULES IS DEAD gives voice to the kind of feelings and frustrations rarely expressed in lyric form. “The main thing I want to do with my music is to make people feel heard, because for so long I felt like I wasn’t heard,” says the 18-year-old singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist hailing from the town of Barrie, Ontario.  Deeply informed by their perspective as a non-binary artist of colour, the music of JULES IS DEAD ultimately pushes the genre forward while providing a much-needed outlet for the endless turmoil faced by their generation.

Signed to Atlantic Records, via a joint venture partnership with TAG Music, JULES IS DEAD has spent the past year working on their debut project—an impossibly catchy batch of songs confronting everything from the paralysis of depression to abuses of power and subordination of women. Much of the work demonstrates Jules’ knack for striking that potent balance between personal revelation and impassioned commentary, cathartically delivered through a rollercoaster of tender piano moments that burst into breakneck anthems driven by Jules’ blistering guitar work and in-your-face biting vocals.

FIVE QUESTIONS WITH EMO-PUNK JULES IS DEAD

WHICH MEMBER OF THE BAND ARE WE TALKING TO?

Jules P.K.A. JULES IS DEAD (Jules -  she/they)

WHEN AND WHERE DID YOUR LOVE OF MUSIC FORM?

It’s always been a part of me from growing up listening to my parents play Radiohead, U2, R.E.M., Miles Davis and more. I came into my own music taste in eighth grade when I discovered all the emo bands I love now like AFI, Paramore, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, and Jimmy Eat World.

WHAT WAS THE FIRST CONCERT YOU WENT TO?

The first concert I went to was AFI at the Hollywood Palladium on the Bodies tour in 2022. That show felt so amazing and the energy of the crowd was something I’d never experienced before. Seeing AFI live there is why they’re my favourite band today, seeing them really sold me as a fan.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST “BIG SHOW”? OR YOUR FIRST SHOW EVER?

Our first show ever was at The Burdock in Toronto and I met the promoter at a Turnover concert a few months prior. It was a lot of fun and the feeling of playing live for the first time and seeing the crowd full of all my friends and family was unreal.

WHAT WAS YOUR WORST SHOW OR FUNNIEST SHOW MEMORY?

Funniest show memory of our gigs is definitely my guitarist Adam who sometimes hops in place on stage. He’s always being the silliest of us live and it just makes me laugh so much, it’s always messing me up when I’m trying to sing.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?

I’m super excited to be playing a bunch more shows before the year’s out and opening for The Warning in Toronto in October as they’re one of my favourite bands. Eternally comes out on July 12 with many more tracks to follow.
