Brutal Youth play manic hardcore punk rock. They started out with three simple rules: Play it fast; keep it under 90 seconds and don't be precious about repeating a hook… because when your songs are that short people can always just hit rewind and play 'em again. Over a decade later they've broken every single one of those rules.

Energetic, raw, honest, heart on the sleeve punk rock, Brutal Youth have been causing a ruckus for the last 10+ years. Formed in 2010, the band hit the ground running and recorded their first brutally fantastic album, "Spill Your Guts". Shortly thereafter the group uprooted themselves from their hometown of St. John's, NL and moved to Toronto. After settling in to their new digs, Brutal Youth gained attention locally with their lightning-fast sets and blood-soaked high-intensity performances. A bunch of records and touring ensued.

DUSTIN CAMPBELL (DC) OF BRUTAL YOUTH ANSWERS FIVE QUESTIONS

WHICH MEMBER OF THE BAND ARE WE TALKING TO?

Drummer

WHEN AND WHERE DID YOUR LOVE OF MUSIC FORM?

My mom was always listening to rock music when I was growing up. Kiss, Black Sabbath, Beatles, Aerosmith, etc.I’d say that was the inception of my love of music. It really formed when I was in the 7th grade, or so. An older kid left an Operation Ivy tape at the skatepark.I picked it up and brought it home and proceeded to wear it out for the next several months.I eventually copped to him that I had his tape, hoping that he wouldn’t kick my ass.He didn’t. He was just stoked that I was into it and let me borrow another tape with Dead Kennedys on one side, and Misfits on the other side.

WHAT WAS THE FIRST CONCERT YOU WENT TO?

I’m sure there were some before, but my first real vivid memory of a concert was seeing The Jeff Healey Band at Victoria Park in London. I remember being so blown away that there was a band right in front of me playing songs that I had heard on the radio in my Mom’s car. Not to mention it was a blind dude shredding on guitar and singing. Also, just being completely enthralled by the music and the atmosphere. I was young, but I remember it being super rad being there.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST “BIG SHOW”? OR YOUR FIRST SHOW EVER?

In the 7th grade (before I found that Op Ivy tape) I was into KoRn. Yes, KoRn.This girl bought us tickets and her Mom drove us to the show and sat with us.I remember enjoying it, but it didn’t grab me and pull me in like my first club show did.In like, 2001, I crammed into the back of a bud’s minivan and went to see Belvedere and Bigwig at Call the Office in London. That was the night. I’ll never forget it. I spent the first bit just standing back in awe at the fact that I was there in this little club where so many amazing bands had played, so close to bands who were such an integral part of my daily skateboard playlists. I remember eventually getting the courage to hop into the pit and almost instantly getting knocked on my ass, only to have like, 4 or 5 hands immediately grab me and pull me back onto my feet. I knew right then; this is where I want to be. This is where I belong. I was hooked, man.

WHAT WAS YOUR WORST SHOW OR FUNNIEST SHOW MEMORY?

Man, there's so many crazy/funny stories from the road. One that comes to mind isn’t exactly show related, but it happened immediately after a show.We were in Belgium and had just finished our set. It was super late and the promoter just gave us an address on a piece of paper, telling us that’s the address we were staying at.I believe it was just one of his friend’s places who were away and cool with us crashing there. The address was something like, you know, 100 Blank St. We arrived, beat, just wanting to crash, and saw that there was a door for 100A, or something. We opened the door and walked in. immediately to our right there was an open door with someone sleeping on a couch with a TV on. We assumed since no one was supposed to be there, that was not our spot. We walked single file up a narrow, pitch black staircase with all of our shit in hand to a small landing with 3 more doors, all of which that we locked. We then backed down the stairs and back out onto the street. We quickly realized that next door to 100A, there was a door that said 100. As we were just about to walk in, this giant man in his underwear came out of 100A and started screaming at us in French. I mean, this dude was huge, and this dude was pissed.

Pat, our singer, luckily speaks decent French and eventually was able to diffuse the situation.

Apparently, one of the main points he kept screaming was that if we come in his house again, he’d, “slit our fucking throats”Anyways, once we got inside the proper spot, there was a rad little cat named Mustache. He ruled. So that was cool. We got up the next day to hit the road and someone had keyed the entire side of our nice black rental van. At the end of the tour, right before we were to drop it off at the airport, we took a sharpie and coloured in the scratch as best we could. We were never charged for it, so I guess we did an ok job!

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOUR BAND?

We’re heading to Montreal to play a show with our pals The Last Mile in a couple of weeks. We’re early in the demo stage for some new tunes, so hopefully we’ll get a bunch of new stuff ready to track this winter. Then I think we’re going to head back to Europe in 2025, because it’s been way too long!
