The tale of Abigail Austin begins in the way many trans stories do: at the crossroads where youthful knowledge and self-awareness are forced into submission by the western cult of repression and shame. As so often happens, such harm eventually transferred into the confusion and sleepless nights of an adult.
However, given time, in the liminal space between fitful dreams, resided memories of femininity. Survivors waiting patiently in the wings as a movement in the younger generations came crashing into the global consciousness.
Youthful mentors who would guide Abigail and so many others on a radical path of self-discovery.While many trans origins hold similar triumphs and heartaches, Abby’s specific story carries the weight of a middle-aged person—someone with a long career built upon name recognition and reputation.

FIVE QUESTIONS WITH ABIGAIL AUSTIN
WHICH MEMBER OF THE BAND ARE WE TALKING TO?
I’m the only member. My name is Abigail Austin but I used to be named Austin Lucas.
WHEN AND WHERE DID YOUR LOVE OF MUSIC FORM?
My very first memories were of music and singing with my dad and brother because my family is almost entirely composed of artists, songwriters and old time musicians. You could say that music was in my DNA and nobody would accuse you of hyperbole.
WHAT WAS THE FIRST CONCERT YOU WENT TO?
It’s impossible to track the very first concert that I ever saw but I’d say the most important concert of my young life was when I saw X open up for Warren Zevon.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST “BIG SHOW”? OR YOUR FIRST SHOW EVER?
The X/Warren Zevon gig was probably the first intentionally big show that I ever insisted my family take me to, but my dad forced me to see Emmylou Harris about a year before that and she absolutely blew my young-little-mind.
WHAT WAS YOUR WORST SHOW OR FUNNIEST SHOW MEMORY?
Hmmm, I have literally no interest in stirring up shit by talking about the worst show I ever saw but the funniest thing I ever saw on a stage was a very drunk string band with an omnidirectional mic having a meltdown about gauging distance for lead vs. rhythm instruments and vocals. They couldn’t even make it through a song without getting angry at each other and it got so outrageous that I almost could’ve sworn they were doing a comedy bit.
