FIVE QUESTIONS WITH FAST EDDIE KNOWLTON

WHEN AND WHERE DID YOUR LOVE OF MUSIC FORM?

I grew up consistently listening to rock radio with my mom and dad singing along to their favorite songs in the house, the car or up at the trailer. My mom also played guitar and my Opa would entertain me as a kid with his giant accordion or trusty harmonica when I would come and visit. My dad has this incredible voice, and same with a few of my aunts and uncles, one of which played drums in a touring band back in the '80s. To say music is in my blood wouldn't be too far fetched but it's my love of the underground scene and pop punk that really drove me to be where I am today. I was fortunate enough to spend my formative years in Kitchener-Waterloo during the thriving "519punk.com" and "Sellout" days (shout-out to Cooper and J-Cloth) where shows at The Registry, Button Factory, The Wax and the legendary Trasheteria were always abundant. Bands like Handheld, The Fullblast, Sewing With Nancie (aka The Reason), Farewell To Freeway, the entire Underground Operations roster, plus certain Fat/Epitaph bands were seemingly coming through town every other weekend and it only reenforced my drive to do what I saw all these amazing bands doing each and every show.

WHAT WAS THE FIRST CONCERT YOU WENT TO?

My first real concert would have been going to see Good Charolette and Simple Plan at The Kool Haus in Toronto when I was in grade 9. Like I mentioned before, I love pop punk, and in the early 2000's you couldn't get much more modern pop punk then GC and SP. But my biggest take away from that show was seeing and hearing the band Autopilot Off for my very first time. That band, Autopilot Off, completely changed the trajectory of my musical journey. Watching these four guys come out with zero knowledge of who they were and completely blowing me away with their authentic stage presence and awesome songs, it felt like something more achievable than I had ever though of before watching those bigger "Much Music" bands I saw on TV. I felt a deeper connection to this music, something in it was a little more real and tangible than that of the bands I had paid money to be there for. All three bands played amazingly and it was more than this little minor-niner pop punker could have ask for - truly a night I will always remember.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST “BIG SHOW”? OR YOUR FIRST SHOW EVER?

Unfortunately I can never trace back the first local show I ever attended...not sure why. But I can definitely tell you the first show my first band ever played. It was the summer of the early 2000's and my band Corrupt Society was getting ready to play our first "real" show outside the basement or backyard at the local hot spot The Registry Theatre. We were super excited because Sudbury's pop punk kings Far From Heroes were making the trek down to play (if you don't remember their song/video "Start The Circus", go look it up after you're done here) and we couldn't wait to play with them. But as it goes for most bands, something came up and they weren't able to play anymore...we were bummed. Still happy about playing our first show, we found out the replacement headliner was going to be this Toronto band called Dead Letter Dept. - part of that Underground Operations roster I previously mentioned. They weren't the pop punk band I was hoping to play with but alas it was still going to be a good time. Being the greenest in the scene, we opened the show and local Waterloo heartthrobs The Durty Sox and Cambridge rippers Some Other Influence filled out the rest of the line-up. When Dead Letter Dept plugged in their instruments, there was a shift in the presence on stage from the rest of the show. Something about this band felt more like they were playing for a cause then just playing for fun. They blew the roof off the place and I found a new appreciation for more politically/lyrically driven punk rock that was just as much about the message as it was about the music. Funny enough, in doing some research this interview, I only now just discovered that the legendary Rob Moir fronted that band - which makes total sense. He is one of those electric gone acoustic punk rockers that inspired me to do that same type of thing when I first started this project...funny how things work out like that.

WHAT WAS YOUR WORST SHOW OR FUNNIEST SHOW MEMORY?

One of my funniest show memories comes from my good friend Bill Morton. Bill helped me out a lot with mixing and mastering most of my previous releases, one being my latest single "Take Me Back". In that song, I had some fun and threw in some loose "gang" type backing vocals for the bridge...if you've heard it, you know it's a bit on the silly side. So, one of the first times that I ever played that song live, Bill was there. With the song being so new, I expected just to run through it without much thought or really anything much from the audience during the tune. I start playing the song; it's a faster paced up-tempo beat with people bobbing their heads and listening along to driving foot tambourine. Then the bridge comes with the first half palm-muted breakdown before I ramp up to the second half, which includes those backing vocals. Again, knowing the song is so new, I just went into that section as confident as I could to make my way though to the end of the song. Well, wouldn't you know it, Bill chimes in with the loudest and punchiest back-up vocals I ever heard from a single person in a crowd and immediately have to stop playing because I'm folded over laughing so hard, and now so is everyone else. It wasn't anything overly hilarious, but in that moment, in the little room, it felt like comedy gold. I took me a few minutes to get myself together and finish the song but the rest to the set was nothing but grins and giggles every time we looked at each other. Moral of the story: always prepare for anything...and music is always funnier with friends!
