PEDESTRIAN BIO:

The generational backwash of a once taste-making music scene, Pedestrian is a punk-rock adjacent band hailing from the a-great-place-to-start-a-family capital, Burlington, Ontario. With songs covering a vast range of relatable topics; from the ending of relationships all the way to why those relationships ended, Pedestrian’s goal is to bum you out in the most fun way possible.

Their upcoming EP, ‘So Happy You’re Here’, is set to release November 22nd. It is filled with all the angst you’d expect from a teenager, but we’re all in our 30’s. Pedestrian will be celebrating the release of ‘So Happy You’re Here’ while supporting Single Mothers November 30th at the Corktown Pub in Hamilton, Ontario.

For fans of Weezer's early stuff.

FIVE QUESTIONS WITH NICK TOEWS OF PEDESTRIAN

WHICH MEMBER OF THE BAND ARE WE TALKING TO?

 Nick Toews (Singer/Guitarist)

WHEN AND WHERE DID YOUR LOVE OF MUSIC FORM?

I’m lucky enough to have two older brothers, both of whom are musicians. My oldest brother, Nate, is eight years older than me, the second, Luc, is only two years older. The thing that we were able to bond over was music. Growing up, I was constantly being introduced to music that was maybe a bit outside of my age demographic; I knew who bands like Operation Ivy were in like 3rd grade. Did I get them? Not necessarily, but it exposed me to stuff that wasn’t *NSYNC. As my brothers aged into the thriving early-to-mid 2000’s Hamilton-Burlington-Random Churches in Milton music scene, I tagged along shortly behind them, slowly finding my own taste and drive to get involved. So I guess I have them to thank, but if they ever read this, you guys didn’t do shit and I give all the credit to Big Shiny Tunes (specifically 7 & 8).

WHAT WAS THE FIRST CONCERT YOU WENT TO?

Aside from all of the times my family took me to Sound of Music to see Shania Twin or the Practically Hip, I would have to say the one that stands out is when I saw my brother’s band, Armada, play at the YMCA. It was at a time where the Metal-core stuff was really popping off. I remember seeing people mosh (or “Throw Down” as the Randy River jean wearing, checkered Vans enthusiasts of that era called it) for the first time and being confused, excited, and terrified simultaneously. After that I was hooked, for better or worse.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST “BIG SHOW”? OR YOUR FIRST SHOW EVER?

The timeline is a little foggy but I would say ignoring Disney on Ice, it must have been Underoath, Taking Back Sunday and Armor for Sleep at Arrow Hall. Underoath was touring Define the Great Line, Fred Mascherino was still in Taking Back Sunday, Armor for Sleep was there (and good). Just a great show all around. It was the first time someone ever tried to sell me weed, but certainly not the last.

WHAT WAS YOUR WORST SHOW OR FUNNIEST SHOW MEMORY?

There are so many to choose from and they’re often funny and terrible at the same time.

I played a show in Montreal with my brother’s project, Luxe, and it wasn’t until right before we went on that I realised I had left all of my guitar pedals in Toronto. Imagine Nu Metal riffs through a clean amp. I opened up for Counterparts in my highschool metal band, which was a huge deal, and many people asked me after our set  “what happened?”, which is exactly what you want to hear. I played a headlining show with an old sort of post-hardcore band of mine, Neversaints. We had 3 songs witten and just made noise for a half hour and people seemed to prefer the noise. Sick band though. If you can get over that immediate gut wrenching feeling of bombing, it’s actually pretty fun.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOUR BAND?

Well, we are releasing an EP. Soon. Like, you’ll hear it around the time that you’re reading this. It’s called ‘So Happy You’re Here’ and Fannatickets is getting the exclusive. Aside from that, to be completely transparent, I’m not really sure. It’s been a long labour to push this baby out. We’re incredibly proud of this EP, but we are also a bunch of dudes in our thirties with shifting priorities. This project stemmed from me writing a bunch of songs and trying to build a band with my friends. My band has really supported me and are the whole reason I was ever able to get this project off the ground. That being said, I want to be more active, through this project or other collaborations. So I’ll keep writing music and if people like what I’m doing, they’re welcome to come join.
